John C. ''Jack'' Roelle
May 31, 1926 - May 12, 2000

John Roelle MUSCATINE, Iowa #45;- John C. 'Jack' Roelle, 73, of Muscatine, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Homes. The Rev. Don Swanson of First Baptist Church will officiate. Vocalist will be Kevin Lloyd. Pallbearers will be Dusty Roelle, Josh Roelle, Eric Roussel, Kerry Moore, Alek Dietrich, and Ron Noll. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Eitman, Tom Fox, Ron Hazen, Merle Sturms, Rich Conklin, Tom Hoopes, Bill Schmalz and Bob Minder. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. A luncheon will be held following the services at Helen's home at 57 Geneva Drive. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Muscatine Little League or the American Diabetes Association. Mr. Roelle was born May 31, 1926, in Muscatine, the son of John I. and Blanche Will Roelle. He married Helen B. Schmalz on Jan. 17, 1952, in Burlington. He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge No. 304, the Moose Lodge, the VFW Post 1545, the Policeman's Association, the Quarterback Club. For many years he was chief umpire for the Muscatine Little League Association and coached a little league team for several years. He served in the Navy during World War II. He retired from the Muscatine Police Department in 1981 as assistant police chief with 33 years of service in the department. Survivors include Helen Roelle of Muscatine; three sons, Steve Roelle and his wife, Susan of Muscatine, Douglas Roelle of Muscatine and David Roelle of North Platte, Neb.; a daughter, Janet Gerst and her husband, Gary, of Columbus Junction; eight grandchildren, Joshua, Carrie and Dusty Roelle, Stacy Lloyd, Ashley and Heather Gerst, Angie Brauns and Megan Roelle; five great-grandchildren; a brother, John Dennis Roelle of Wilton. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Robert Roelle and Edward and Bernard Keen.
