In loving memory of

Dorothy Schmidt
January 24, 1910 - May 9, 2001

Dorothy Schmidt DAVENPORT, Iowa - Our adventurous traveler's last trip ended May 9, 2001, when she died unexpectedly in Brazil, South America. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday in Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. She was born Jan. 24, 1910, in White Lake, SD, to Cornelius and Johannah Meier. She met Charles Schmidt in Baxter, Iowa, and they were married Jan. 22, 1939, in Unionville, Mo. She was touring with the VIP Club, Northwest Bank of which she was a member. She was also a former member of the Broadway Theatre League, Friends of Art, Tri City Symphony, Mother Singers, Brownie/Girl Scout leader, PTA officer, Sunday school and vacation Bible school teacher. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She has traveled to five continents and 50 states. The one country she always wanted to visit was Russia. She said she would, too, when her ship came in. Anytime there was an opportunity to hike, ride horseback, go river tubing, ride rapids, kayak or parasail, (which she did last year) she did it. Her travels began in 1954 when the couple purchased a new car and camping equipment. This is how they explored the states and went on a special camping expedition to Iceland. These vacations escalated to cruises, trips to foreign countries and many island tours. Sports were also a joy. Season Hawkeye tickets with many tailgate parties, Chicago Cub games with the VIP group and members of her family and the best sport was attending games where her grandchildren played. Survivors include her husband, Charles; daughters and husbands, Maureen and Gary Ruser of Stockton, Marlene and Jerry Bromell of Grand Mound, IA and Charlee and Jim Coonts of Davenport; grandchildren, Gregory and Timothy Ruser, Annette Kanakares, Melanie Koch, Thomas and David Bromell, Susan Simmons, Karen Roe, Carson Coonts and 13 great-grandchildren; very special friends, Wes and Jill Kirkpatrick. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters, an infant son, Carlye, and a granddaughter, Michele Ruser. Special thanks to the American Consulate in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
