James E. ''Whitey'' Vastine
June 16, 1935 - June 7, 2001

James Vastine DURANT, Iowa - James E. 'Whitey' Vastine, 65, of Durant died on Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Genesis Medical Center West, Davenport, Iowa. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Wilton. Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Bentley Funeral Homes in Durant and Monday, one hour prior to services at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The officiant will be Fr. Jack Gallagher. Music will be provided by organist Bev Reuter and vocalist Henry Bentley. Serving as casket bearers will be Mike Davis, Chuck Rogers, Wayne Lincoln, Alfred Peters, Bill Sterner and Tom Grant. Honorary casket bearer will be Norm Winter. Interment will take place on Monday at Durant Cemetery, Durant. Memorials may go to the Durant Athletic Boosters. Mr. Vastine was born June 16, 1935, to Cedric and Amanda (Ovesen) Vastine in Davenport. He married Betty Bujewski Aug. 21, 1954, in Wilton. He was employed as an electrical lineman at Eastern Iowa Light amp; Power for 39 years, retiring in 1997. He was a member of IBEW and a former member of the Durant Athletic Boosters. He was an avid New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers fan. He enjoyed NASCAR, golf, darts, pool, woodworking and all sports. He was an all-around handy man. He loved to play fast-pitch softball and watch his grandchildren play sports. Survivors include his fiancee Marilyn Peckenschneider of Durant, his mother, Amanda Vastine of Durant; two daughters, Judy (Mrs. Kurt) Bowman of Minneapolis, Minn., Jill (Mrs. Kevin) Garvey of Hudson; three sons, Jeff and his wife Marilyn Vastine of Minneapolis, Minn., Joe and his wife Tina Vastine of Durant, John Vastine of Davenport; two sisters Helen (Mrs. Robert) Kaas of Durant, Ann (Mrs. Don) Plambeck of Davenport; 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.
