Jack L. Fickle, 77, of Waterbury, Nebraska passed away at his residence on Sunday, August 1, 2010, following a battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, Nebraska with Hospice Hospice of Siouxland Chaplain Kay Morrissey officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Dept. of the Navy, assisted by the South Sioux City American Legion Post #307. Burial will be at a later date. Following the service, lunch will be served at the Buzzsaw in Waterbury. Visitation with the family present will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Jack was born August 21, 1932 to Ivan and Helen (Thompson) Fickle in rural Wayne, Nebraska. He grew up and attended various schools in Wayne County. He graduated from Carroll, Nebraska High School in 1949. At the age of 18, he joined the service, serving in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He married Virginia Surber in 1981. He worked as a boiler technician at Marian Health for 14 ½ years, retiring in 1991.

He was a member of the Martinsburg VFW Post #5435 and the Fleet Reserves.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, canning, boating and playing cards. He also enjoyed helping all his family, friends and community, and assisted with numerous benefit fundraisers in the community.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Waterbury, Nebraska; children, Lynda (Lloyd) Ogilvie of Lincoln, RI, Laurie (Pete) Tremblay of Pawtucket, RI and Jack (Tammy) Vicino of Warwick, RI; stepchildren, Don (Patti) Surber of Belden, NE, Kim (Mark) Strathman of Randolph, NE, and Kelly (Toni) Surber of Stuart, IA; brothers and sisters, Nancy (Don) Landanger of Winside, NE, Dick (Jackie) Fickle of RI, Jim Fickle of Washington, Charles (Mary) Fickle of Kentucky, Marcella Story of Wichita, KS and Pat O'Connor of Idaho; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Dolly (Wayne) Noe; and brother, "Babe".
