WAPELLO, Iowa #45;- Ruth Elizabeth Mangels, 95, Wapello, died Friday, March 11, 2005, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. The Rev. Harlan W. Winter will officiate the services. Burial will be at the Wapello Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the American Red Cross. Mrs. Mangels was born on June 12, 1909, in rural Wapello, the daughter of Charles A. and Julia Williamson Eversmeyer. She married Bernhard 'Ben' William Mangels on Sept. 30, 1943, in Walcott. He preceded her in death on March 14, 1991. She and her husband lived in Davenport until 1947 when they moved to Wapello. She graduated from Wapello High School in 1928 and attended Gem City School of Business, Quincy, Illinois. She worked for several years at Security Fire Insurance Co., Davenport, and then continued secretarial work at the Louisa County Courthouse and also at the Hicklin and Matthews Law Office in Wapello. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, Wapello, serving as the church secretary for many years and also as a past president of the Women's Society of Christian Service now known as the United Methodist Women. She was a 50-year member and a past Noble Grand of the former Derexa Rebekah Lodge No. 129, Wapello, and the Ladies Auxiliary Encampment, New London. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Wapello, and now the Emma Beckman Chapter No. 445 of the Order of Eastern Star, Columbus City. She was also a member of the Long Creek Homemakers Club, the Friendly Neighbors Club, the Colonial Quilting Club, the Senior Citizens and the Louisa County Historical Society. In early years, she had been a Girl Scout leader and 4-H leader and had been a volunteer with the TB Association and the American Red Cross, making good use of her typing skills. She had been a provider for others including various family members at her home and also for neighbors. She enjoyed embroidery and quilting. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Campbell of Chicago, Illinois and Lelia Nichols of Orlando, Florida.; four grandchildren, Belinda Newcomb, Angela Ewart, Jana Campbell and Jonathan Campbell; six great-grandchildren, Michael Newcomb, Warin Newcomb, Kayla Ling, Ashley Ewart, Courtney Ewart and Samantha Ewart; and a great-great granddaughter, Kaileigh Newcomb. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Inez Weber and Lelia Eversmeyer.
