Martha Hakes Services: 4 p.m., today, May 29, Church of the Advent of Christ the King, San Francisco, Calif. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Martha Jean Hakes, 77, of San Francisco, died Thursday, May 24, 2007, at her home. The Duggan's Serra Mortuary is handling the arrangements. Internment will be this summer in Muscatine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Ms. Hakes was born in Muscatine, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Crampton Hakes. She was a soprano and was extremely active throughout her career in performances of early and Baroque music. She was a soloist and toured with the New York Pro Musica and appeared with numerous chamber groups such as the N.Y. Baroque Ensemble, the Renaissance Quartet, the Trio Flauto Dolce and the Washington Consort. In addition, her numerous solo appearances included performances at Yale University, the University of California at Berkeley and New York University. She sang the role of Galatea in the New York Chamber Soloists presentation of Handel's Acis and Galatea in a major concert series through the U.S. She was also a professor of music at Brooklyn College where she directed a Collegium Musicum. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Witherwax; a grandson, Benjamin Flayton; a sister, Mary Anne Gallagher; nephews; nieces; and cousins, including Mr. and Mrs. John Stevens and family of Muscatine. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Elizabeth H. Harrer.
