"Hi Maureen:
You don't know me but I knew Greg for a brief period of time at Upper Iowa College in the fall of 1966. I left after that Christmas to return to NY but kept in touch with Gregg for a time. I was taking a sentimental journey on the internet and was sad to just find out that Gregg passed in 2010. I want to offer your my condolences after 12 years and hope you still visit this site from time to time. I will always remember Greggs friendly disposition and beaming smile. He once said that he wouldn't like to have to fly in NY and that if he had engine trouble in the Midwest he could land anywhere.
I attached a couple of photos he sent me in September 1967 and the notes he wrote on the back.
Once again I'm sorry for your loss but have always thought of Gregg over the last 50 plus years."

"Hi Maureen and family. I was startled when I recently learned about Gregg?s unexpected passing. Please accept my sincere condolences.
I had the opportunity and pleasure of working with Gregg during the 1970s when when first beginning his engineering career. He was a good engineer and a good man. I know that he is missed. "

"It has been a year and a half since you left us and we still ache. There is a hole in our family we fill with laughter and jokes as you taught us but it isn't the same. Since I last saw you I've been to Mexico and Brazil...wishing I could tell you about each trip. Ive also gotten remarried to a wonderful man and I am expecting my first child! Yes, you would have welcomed another grandson...only now we have to fill him with your love through stories instead. I wish he could have met his papa. But at least he will carry a middle name in honor of you. I will rest assured that we will all meet up again when our journeys here are complete. Then you owe me a hug for leaving so suddenly. Miss you dad...with each breath."

"I was so sorry to hear of Gregg's death. I was in Marine boot camp with him. Like a lot of Vietnam vets, I was busy building a life and a family after the war. I didn't keep in touch with people. The last time I saw Gregg was in Vietnam just before we shipped out to the states. We were both glad that we were making it out alive. He took his job seriously, but he always had a smile and a positive outlook. He was someone you could always count on. I passed through Wheatland about a year ago and I wondered if he was still around. I wish I would have pursued that. I know that his passing leaves a tremendous void for his friends and family. He should have been able to be here longer. He was one of the good guys. No words are enough to comfort at this time. My condolences to all."

"Wade & the Horner family,
I am sorry to hear of the death of your father, husband & grandfather. Death is never easy to face and accept, but it is the one thing that all of us have to learn to deal with. In many ways you are lucky to have had a good relationship with a man who has so much class.
I always enjoyed seeing your Gregg when he visited at UNMC. May the sorrow that you feel today change to fond memories of the time that you got to share with him. With time the sorrow never goes away.....but you will learn to accept and deal with it. May the memories of the time spent with him turn into fond joyous memories.

"Maureen & family,
Was saddened to hear of Gregg's death. I was a classmate of his. I work at the Auto Body shop across the street from his parent's home. In fact, last time Gregg was home he came over to the shop and we had a great visit.
He was always such a gentle soul. Had time to visit with everyone no matter how rushed he was. He will be missed and thought of with great compassion. I consider myself lucky to have been a classmate and able to visit with him one last time. Janet Boedeker Class of 1966"

"Gregg had it the roughest of us 4 boys growing up on the farm. The eldest of the boys he worked like a man early mornings before school and late nights and weekends since I could remember as a child. I will always remember him driving the John Deere 720 combining oats or cultivating corn in the dead heat of the Iowa summer with nothing more than a glass canning (quart) jar of water in a freezer bag (we kids thought water coolers cost to much) between his feet on the tractor all day long - and the Iowa summer days are very long. Or square baling 3 cuttings (80 acres each cutting for a total of 240 acres) of hay in a summer which meant Gregg was stuck in the hay mound all day (no silos back then). Or the foot races with him through the soybean fields pulling volunteer corn by hand when it was to wet to work the fields with a tractor. Then came the Marines and Vietnam. Needless to say Gregg had no time for any childhood that is expected by the children of today. The best thing that happened to him was marrying his wife Maureen. For over 39 years they were very happy raising their family together. They were a very close family. I learned a lot about work ethics from Gregg at a very young age. I am convinced our life on the farm was the key to my successful career in the Army. Semper Fi, Gregg, I will always miss you. Your younger brother Gene DeWulf, Colonel, U.S. Army Retired."

"To the whole Horner Clan: I couldn't have made it through my teen years without you. If God pulled me aside and said "pick a new family", it'd have been you all with your kooky antics but deep, apparent, and abiding love for one another.
I am stunned and saddened by your loss. I am so very sorry. I have no words, really.
My love and thoughts are with you all. -Monica"
