Peter J. Kelly Jr.
December 23, 2010

Peter J. Kelly Jr., Age 60 of Ambler PA., died Thursday, December 23, 2010 at Rydal Park in Rydal, PA.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Peter J, Sr. and Margaret (nee Johnson) Kelly, Sr.

Pete Kelly taught English for 35 years in the Abington School District starting at Glenside Weldon Junior High in 1972. He later moved to Abington High School North Campus and finally completed his career spending 22 years at Abington Senior High School. He proudly served his final three years as English Department Chairperson at the high school. He was a multi-talented teacher in the classroom who was very proud of the fact that he rarely had a student discipline problem. His specialty was British literature, and he employed interesting anecdotes and clever humor as extremely effective tools of instruction. Pete`s attendance record was impeccable as he only missed two teaching days in his entire career due to family funerals. He was usually the first to arrive in the morning, and he was a true professional in his approach to his teaching and to his students. In short, he was a major asset to the Abington High English Department and to the school district and community in general.

Peter was also very proud of his involvement in the drama program at the high school. He served for many years as the director of the all-school dramatic offering and also as the co-director of the school musical. He had countless successes, especially the presentations of his beloved musical Annie. He frequently boasted that he had seen that musical some 65 times.

Pete was also a sports enthusiast who played soccer in college at East Stroudsburg, and he also officiated local high school baseball as a registered PIAA umpire. He was selected to umpire a game in the Carpenter Cup tournament at Veterans Stadium. He was an excellent softball player in several local leagues, and he coached when he taught at Glenside Weldon Jr. High.

Pete loved walking, nature, and travel, especially to his beloved Ireland. He was a valued colleague and friend to many, and he successfully taught thousands of young people from Abington Township.

He is survived by his brother John "Jack" Kelly and his wife Theresa of Blue Bell

"I was a student at Glenside Weldon Jr High when Mr. Kelly was a brand-new teacher. I remember him being a good teacher who was also both fair and fun. He was athletic and used to coach or help out with our soccer and baseball teams. I remember this was the era when they begun making the boys take a session at Home Ec (instead of Shop). One of our assignments was to make breakfast and invite our favorite two teachers which happened to be Mr Kelly & Mr. Dodds. Looking back, they were both goods sports and brave considering we were all kind of wild. I am sorry to hear he had health complications and passed away so young. "
