GARNER - Doris Claude, 93, of Garner died Friday (December 26, 2008) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Garner with Rev. David Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Monday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th, Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Iva Doris Claude, the daughter of John and Ivy (Thorne) Gatchel, was born July 4, 1915, at Britt. She attended school in Britt until her junior year in high school. She then moved with her family to a farm east of Garner. On June 20, 1934, she was married to Albert Claude at her parent's farm near Garner. They farmed near Stilson before moving to Garner where they continued farming until retiring in 1974. Doris and Albert were proud to have been selected as Farm Family of the Week by the Garner Leader in 1949. In 1985, they moved in to Garner. In September of 2003, Doris entered Concord Care Center in Garner. She loved her family and spending time with them. She enjoyed cooking, especially trying new recipes, playing bridge, and traveling which included trips to England, Alaska, Washington, D.C. and New York City. The highlight of her trip to New York was seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time. Because she was born on the 4th of July, she was strong in her love for her country, the flag and all patriotic music.

Doris was an active member of the United Methodist Church and UMW.

Doris is survived by her daughters, Sharon (David) Coe of Carbon Cliff, IL, Judith (Donald) Anderson of Britt and Kathryn (Doug) Siverson of Denver, CO; grandchildren, Lori (Phil) Krambeer of Ventura, Brian (Stacy) Anderson of Waukee, Jodi (Jeff) Brown of Albert Lea, MN, Kari (Delbert) McFarland of Ault, CO and Tara Riley of Loveland, CO; fourteen great grandchildren; a brother, James (Kathryn) Gatchel of Garner; a sister, Emma Lou (Lynn) Stayner of Punta Gorda, FL; and sisters-in-law, Robertine Gatchel of Garner and Rena Claude of Garner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; her parents; grandson, Richard Lang; and siblings, Eva (Ed) Kumsher, Johnny (Pearl) Gatchel and Clarence Gatchel.

She was loved and will be missed by many.

Tributes

Margo Greiman, family friend wrote on Dec 29, 2008:

"I will always remember the wonderful, happy times spent with Doris and Albert on the farm. How Doris always made me eat breakfast (eggs)when I stayed overnight with Kathy - Doris would always laugh as I choked the eggs down!!! She was a wonderful cook, I was not a breakfast person then. We had to eat a hearty breakfast so we could walk beans! I even got to drive the tractor. Doris, Albert and Kathy took me to my first movie, Bambi, at the theater in Forest City. To this day I remember the excitement of that evening! I will forever carry in my heart the wonderful memories shared with your family! Doris will be missed but never forgotten - Thinking of you all -"

Cindy Kadinger, niece wrote on Dec 29, 2008:

"I always enjoyed coming to your farm. I'll never forget watching a sheep (I think) give birth while I was visiting with my parents, Lynn and Emma Lou. I also remember playing with cousin David Gatchel in your grove. Don't tell Eva, but you were my favorite aunt on my mom's side. You and Albert were so kind. You will be missed, but your life blessed so many. My prayers to your family. Love Cindy Stayner Kadinger"

Tara Riley, Granddaughter wrote on Dec 28, 2008:

"I remember all the times that I would sit by the stove and watch you cook. You'd let me stir things and even if I spilled some you would just giggle. I love you so much. You will live in my heart always... Love Tara"
