Dr. John Van Miller

Dr. John P. Van Miller, 60, Charlottesville, VA, died unexpectedly on Monday, April 12, 2010. He was born on June 11, 1949 to Doris (LaTour) Van Miller and the late Louis Van Miller, Jr. in Green Bay, WI.
John was a graduate of Green Bay West High School in 1967, and received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay. He went on to receive his Masters and PhD in Pathology from UW-Madison.
He married the former Mary Dachelet on February 14, 1970. They resided in Madison, WI for a number of years where John worked in research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The couple moved to Pittsburgh, PA where John was Director of the Bushy Run Research Center for Union Carbide Corp for many years. They later moved to Danbury, CT where he worked as a toxicologist for Union Carbide. In 2001, they moved to Charlottesville, VA where John was Vice President of Toxicology Regulatory Services, an independent consulting firm.
John was an avid runner, but his real joy was on the golf course, where he spent many hours working on his game, predominantly on the courses of Glenmore and Spring Creek. The people who knew and loved John will always miss him.
He is survived by his wife Mary; his daughter Dr. Kim Van Miller and her significant other Michael Heffner of Blacksburg, VA; his mother Doris of Green Bay; and his brother and sister-in-law Dr. James and Carolyn Van Miller of Green Bay.
John was preceded in death by his father Louis and son Sean.
Friends and family may call on Saturday, April 17 from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel at Fort Howard Memorial Park (1350 North Military Avenue, Green Bay). A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Charlottesville, VA.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in John's name to benefit the following Charlottesville, VA organizations: First Tee children's golf program (1400 Pen Park Rd. Charlottesville, VA 22901), Emergency Food Bank (P.O. Box 4373 Charlottesville, VA 22905-4373), and the Free Clinic (1138 Rose Hill Dr. Charlottesville, VA 22903-5128)
