In loving memory of

Verna Witt
August 21, 1921 - November 5, 2011

Verna Marie Clara Winterhof, daughter of Henry & Lilah (Huseman) Winterhof was born on August 21, 1921 near Galva, Iowa. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith at her parents' home and attended Parochial School and was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church at Hanover, Iowa. She lived on a farm with her parents, also helping friends and relatives in the community. During World War II, Verna worked for a short time in Des Moines, Iowa at a packing plant.

Verna married Ernst Witt on January 19, 1947 and moved to a farm near Bingham Lake, Minnesota. Six children were born to them. She enjoyed being a farm wife, raising chickens, tending the garden, and most of all caring for her family. Verna was a great hostess, and enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives. She loved being in the kitchen where she was a good cook and often baked bread or rolls while listening to the "Kitchen Klatter" radio program. She also enjoyed playing the piano. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and housewife.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom where she was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and served for many years on the funeral committee. She and her husband regularly delivered Meals-On-Wheels and visited shut-ins.

After their kids were grown, they spent many winters in southern Texas where they made many new friends and enjoyed warmer weather. In 1993 they moved to a house in Windom where they lived for 8 years before moving to Heritage House (now Pine View) Assisted Living in Windom. In 2001, Verna moved to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Windom where she received wonderful care during her 10 years there.

On Saturday, November 5, 2011, Verna passed away at the Windom Area Hospital at the age of 90 years.

"To the Witt family: Our sympathy to each of you as you mourn the loss of your mother. Seeing the Witt family names brought to mind the years when the Brueland family lived south of the Witt farm. So much has changed in that area and so many are gone, but we still hold and treasure sweet memories. "

"How do I even put in to words all the love and admiration I have for my Grandma ? The times Lana and I spent with her are among my fondest memories. I never heard her raise her voice. She embodied the Golden Rule which is so evident in her amazing children. My greatest comfort comes from knowing that she is now in heaven, from which she came. I can almost hear her, Grandpa and Aunt Mary singing. I only hope that I can be half the mother and person that she was. I love you Grandma. You truely are " Jesus Little Lamb". "
