Woneta “Ande” Bellevue Mayhue passed away Friday, August 27, 2010, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Although Ande Bellevue Mayhue graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School, she grew up in Mansfield, Ohio and attended Mt. St. Joseph Convent School in Cincinnati. She attended Fort Lauderdale High in her Junior and Senior year and considered herself practically a native of Fort Lauderdale. Over the ensuing years, she has enjoyed attending class reunions and recently renewed some old acquaintances.
Ande was married to Carl Mayhue in January 2003. They enjoyed life together until Carl's passing in July 2007. Carl Mayhue was a long time pillar of Fort Lauderdale Society, and is well remembered for his community involvement, especially for his instrumental role in the building of Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
Ande was an only child. She made friends easily and kept them. Perhaps many people will remember Ande as “… the wine lady.” This came about due to her position with the Mayhue Corporation, where she rose through the ranks to become Treasurer, then Vice President. It was in that work that she was introduced to the charitable community, as almost any time a non-profit met to go over their needs for the next gala… or luncheon… or other special event… and the subject of wine came up, more often than not, someone raised their hands and said, “let’s get in touch with Ande at Mayhue’s Super Liquors.” She seldom said no.
She always enjoyed reading and loved being part of the Monday Book Club, comprised of friends who read a wide variety of books and met for lunch once a month. She loved movies as well, and managed to see one or two a week for quite a few years. Another favorite was belonging to several ‘Birthday Clubs,’ looking forward to finding the right card for the right person and enjoying the company of good friends.
Most of her friendships she developed through her decades of volunteering with numerous cultural and health related non-profits. Ande was active with the Philharmonic Society, chairing such popular projects as the Community Calendar, two Plant Affairs and editing the Newsletter. She also served as Vice President of Membership. Due to her extensive work with the Philharmonic Society, she was honored as a Woman of Style & Substance.
The Opera Society was another cultural support group that Ande embraced enthusiastically, working on many projects over the years. In addition to being on the Board, Ande hosted, along with one of her dear friends, several Guess Who’s Coming To Lunch… The Ladies Who Lunch, which was always a sell out. She was honored as a Diva at the 2008 Diva & Diamonds Luncheon and regularly attended performances of Florida Grand Opera, Symphony of the Americas and Seraphic Fire.
Ande contributed time and countless volunteer hours to Kids in Distress, Pacers, and Goodwill Ambassadors. She served on the Executive Boards of the American Cancer Society 1000+ Club, the Henderson Mental Health Auxiliary, HANDY and the Goodwill Industries Board for two decades. For many years she was on the Broward County Library Foundation Board and participated in numerous Night of Literary Feasts, which she described as “… one of the most enjoyable events in town.” In 1996 she was honored as Woman of the Year by the 1000+ Club of the American Cancer Society representing Goodwill Industries of Broward County.
As an avid and long time supporter of The Humane Society of Broward County and PAWS, Andes stated empathically that “I think the most wonderful things in the world are dogs. I can’t bear to think of a dog, or a cat, not having a loving home.” Her own two dogs Buffy and Britty were her joy.
Travel was another passion of Andes, having traveled throughout Europe, the Orient and South America. “I think Egypt was the most exotic place,” she once commented. She had fond memories of Italy and attended a production at the Vienna Opera House. “But nothing compares to Ephesus, where I could imagine the ancient squares and theatres filled with people, it was the most fascinating experience of my many travels.”
There will be a Viewing at Fred Hunter, 718 S. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale, on Wednesday, September 1st from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a Memorial Service in the Chapel at 6:00 p.m. On Thursday, September 2nd, the internment will take place at Lauderdale Memorial Park Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow at the Coral Ridge Yacht Club at 12:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Symphony of the Americas, the Florida Grand Opera or the Humane Society of Broward County.
