Rex was born July 5, 1919, the son of Clyde M. and Ethel Florence Gorsline DeVore. Rex always remarked that 1919 was the year the American Legion, Earl May, and A&W Root Beer was founded. He entered the Service in January 1942 and served 3 ½ years in England during WWII.
Rex was married to Florence Irene Tuttle November 28, 1942 and to this union seven children were born: Larry, Betty, Billy, Vicki, Susie, Mary, and Jimmy. They farmed several years northeast of Humeston. They were divorced in October 1962.
Rex married Merlene Harvey in April of 1963 and to this union two children were born: Ricky and Laura Sue. Laura died in infancy. They were divorced in 1975.
He married Suzanne Catrenich on October 5, 1986. They lived in Williamson until 2003 when Suzanne moved in West Ridge Nursing Home and then Rex moved to the nursing home in 2006 and lived there until April 2009 when he moved to the VA in Knoxville.
Rex worked at the VA Medical Center in Knoxville for 34 years. As a child Rex loved to hunt and fish. He loved the farm and raised cattle, hogs, sheep, and a lot of chickens. He also loved to garden. He was an Iowa State Master Gardener and loved flowers in his yard and garden.
Rex passed away on October 15, 2009 at the VA Medical Center in Knoxville where he had lived the last six months. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Laura Sue; grandson, Larry Stephen; wife, Florence DeVore; wife, Merlene Oswalt; and siblings: Wayne (Geneva) DeVore and Boyd (Zola) DeVore; brothers in law: Dean Halferty and Robert Sponsler; and sister in law Dorothy DeVore.
He is survived by his wife Suzanne; children: Larry (Karen) DeVore, Betty (Jim) Reed, Bill DeVore, Vicki (Ken) Jones, Susie DeVore, Mary Ann (Robert) Little, Jimmy (Tami) DeVore, and Rick (Annette) DeVore; 16 grandchildren: Evan DeVore, Melissa (Dante) Pierangeli, Elycia Deemer, Mala DeVore, Tommy Guffey, Todd Guffey, Jason Guffey, Heather Barnett, Jeremy DeVore, Robert Little, Holly Berndt, Cody DeVore, Turner DeVore, Skylar DeVore, Terry DeVore, and Mark DeVore; many great grandchildren; and siblings: Paul DeVore, June Halferty, and Muriel Sponsler.
