Thelma Gomel

Thelma J. Gomel, daughter of Thomas and Ella (Truelock) Smith, was born on November 16, 1913, in Washington Township in Page County, Iowa, near Northboro. She passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2006, at her home in Northboro at the age of 93.

The majority of Thelma's life was spent in and around the Northboro area. She attended school in Northboro, graduating from Northboro High School with the Class of 1931. On December 31, 1935, Thelma was united in marriage to Ralph L. Gomel at Rock Port, Missouri, and to this union one son, Jerry, was born. Following their marriage they lived near Craig, Missouri until moving to Northboro in 1944. Thelma was a loving homemaker to her husband and son. She was a long time member of the Northboro United Methodist Church. Thelma enjoyed gardening and baking.

Preceding Thelma in death were her parents; husband, Ralph; sister Evelyn Darby; and two brothers, Lyle and Ronald Smith and a grandson Timothy. Survivors include her son, Jerry Gomel of Northboro, IA; five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, Julia Heter and her husband Steve of Las Vegas, NV, and their children, Natalie, Jessica, Jered and Jocelyn, Jeffrey Gomel and his wife Kathy of Montana and their children Hunter, Hannah and Hayden, Janice Farris and husband Cliff of Las Vegas, NV, and their children, Kyle, Cody and Karli, James Gomel of Las Vegas, NV, and Shannon Ducharme and her husband CJ of Essex, IA; three great great grandchildren, Olivia, Roxy and Danny; brother, Tommy Smith of El Cajon, CA; sister, Bethene Armstrong of Kansas City; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at the Northboro United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2006. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Bea Kinzler. Organist was Anita Vogel. Special music was "I Believe", "Wings Of A Dove" and "How Great Thou Art". The congregation sang "Hymn Of Promise". Attending the memory register was Dorothy Bayless. Caring for the flowers was Iva Jean Cutler. Ushers were Darrell Whitehill and Randall Apperson. Casket bearers were Howard Carlson, Randy Farwell, Don Peterson, Byron Scotton, Craig Smith and Rob Smith. Interment was in the Union Grove Cemetery near Northboro. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Compassionate Care Hospice of Clarinda, Iowa.
