William "Bill" Tyner

William Wayne Tyner the son of William Richard Tyner and Inez L. Anderson Tyner, was born in Fremont County, Iowa, on August 1, 1922, and passed away at Shenandoah, Iowa on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at the age of 85.
Bill attended Shenandoah High School graduating with the class of 1940. From 1942-1945, he served his country during World War II. After the war Bill was united in marriage to Frances Helene Laverty at Summit United Methodist Church on March 17, 1946. After their marriage they made their home on the family farm in Fremont County, Iowa.
Bill was a farmer all his life, beginning on the original 160 acres. In 2006 the farm was honored as a Century Family Farm.
Bill was a longtime member of the Summit United Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post #88 of Shenandoah, Iowa. He had served as Commander and Adjutant. He was always honored to serve as a member of the Color Guard. Bill was a local 4-H Leader and a County 4-H Leader. In 2001 they received the Farm Family Of The Year from the SCIA, and in 2007 he was honored as the Grand Marshall of the July 4th 2007 Parade. He loved to fish, water ski, play ping pong and croquet.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Frances of Shenandoah, IA.; a son Richard Tyner of Shenandoah, (recently returned from Saudi Arabia); a daughter Susan Curtis and husband Jim of Lafayette, CO.; two grandsons, Todd Goodale and his wife Tamar and their daughter Ava of Charlottesville, VA., Scott Goodale and wife Jennifer of Boulder, CO.; two sisters, Janice Dusenberry of Des Moines, IA., and Betty Andre of Shawnee, KS.; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held on Monday, May 5, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Fred Bryson. Attending the memory register were Beth Keep and Gwen Whitehill. Private inurnment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Military rites were accorded by the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88 Color Guard. Memorials in Bill's name are being directed to the Summit Methodist Church or to the Shenandoah American Legion Post # 88 Color Guard. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Having known Bill from years of everything from 4-H and church to Legion color guard, I can say for certain he was one of the nicest people I've ever known. And that was a great interview he did with the Shen newspaper about his military service, a couple of years ago.
