"I WILL NEVER FORGET MY COUSIN.IM GRATEFUL I WAS ABLE TO MEET HIS SON.ALSO IM GRATEFUL I WAS ABLE TO TALK WITH DANNY AND TELL HIM I LOVED HIM.HE WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS. MARY LOU ZOLLARS FORREST"
Daniel Patrick Zollars died on January 7, 2011 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha following a long illness.
Born on October 19, 1951 in Riverdale, Maryland, Dan was the third child of William Frank and Marie (Hoffman) Zollars. Dan's early years were spent in Kentland, Franklin Manor, and Harwood, Maryland.
During his senior year of high school, Dan's parents moved from Harwood. So Dan could graduate with friends, the Daniel McCafferty family welcomed him into their home for his senior year. Dan graduated in 1969 from Southern Senior High School in Harwood, Maryland.
Following graduation, Dan worked at Montgomery Ward until enlisting in the Army in 1971. Dan served as a welder in Germany and was discharged in 1974.
Dan and Amy Mullison of Shenandoah were married on June 20, 1974 in Upper Marlboro, Maryland; later that year they moved to Shenandoah. Dan and Amy had two children, "Darling daughter" Phoebe Jo and Samuel "Sammy" Patrick.
Through the years, Dan was employed by Farmaster, Nishna Valley Lumber, Eaton Corporation, United Building Supply, Nebel Construction, and as an independent roofer and carpenter.
Dan spent many hours in his "shop and pool room" in solitude, and with friend. Always creative and hardworking, Dan made many improvements to his home and worked hard to maintain it for his family's comfort and security.
Dan devoted many hours to the completion and maintenance of the Wabash Trace. Dan believed that the time and energy he spent volunteering on the Wabash Trace ensured that future generations would also find renewal of spirit in the beauty and peace of nature.
Each Memorial Day, Dan helped put up the flags at Rose Hill Cemetery. He looked forward to this yearly ritual as a time to enjoy company of his fellow veterans and honor his father's WW II Naval service.
Dan frequently turned to his aunt, Sister Mary Louise Zollars, for counsel and spiritual advice. Aunt Mary Lou's gentle guidance helped to confirm and strengthen Dan's personal faith.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents and brother Lewis Zollars. He is survived by his wife, daughter Phoebe Pittman and husband Robert of Charles City, IA and son Sam Zollars of Cedars Falls, IA; grandchildren Zadie Isabella and Fiona Mae Pittman; sister Donna Kay Zollars of Cumberland, MD; brother William Zollars and wife Pat of Manassas, VA; sister-in-law Sue Zollars of Elkridge, MD; special friends Dennis McCafferty, Andrew Hartge, Elmo' many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.

"Hello - I worked for Dan in the summer of 1987 roofing around the Shenandoah area. I was between my freshman and sophomore years of college at Iowa State. I have fond memories of that summer. Dan treated me as an adult. He spoke directly to me and expected a lot out of me. That was something that I didn't always get in my home town as a young adult. Dan would make fun of me the few times I bumped into him over the years. I called Dan "sir" out of respect to an elder. I don't think he was used to this or liked it, but we laughed about it after the fact. I was sorry to hear Dan was so ill, and was surprised by his appearance when I saw him during Ragbrai in 2010. I hope he finds rest and peace. Dan and all of his family are in my prayers. Keith Franzen Northbrook, IL"

"Amy, Phoebe, Sam and the Mullison family. In the years that I knew Dan, he was fun to be around and easy going. I've missed seeing him around town, but I do have nothing but pleasant memories of him. He worked for Joe when I had my garage expanded. May Dan be in eternal rest, and may you all find peace in God's love of Dan's passing."
