Wallace George Flynn, son of William Charles, Jr. and Lillie Inez (Maltsberger) Flynn was born on a farm north of Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at the age of 89 years. He was one of twelve children.
Wallace lived his entire life in the Shenandoah area and attended country school. He left country school after completing the 8th grade.
On October 11, 1940, he was united in marriage to Doris Wooten at Rockport, Missouri. Following their marriage, they made their home in Shenandoah and to this union one daughter Joyce Elaine and one son Ivan Robert were born.
Wallace worked various jobs, working for his Dad on the sanitation route and later for Ivan Scharp Sanitation. He also worked for Stevens Brothers oiling roads and driving livestock trucks, picked and shucked corn for a farmer in Randolph and farmed north of Coin. He was also employed by Wards Tire Department, Squires Creamery, drove a tank truck for Skelly Oil and was hired by DeKalb where he worked for 29 years until his retirement. Wallace enjoyed working for DeKalb as an Area Foreman and doing maintenance. Even after his retirement, he would drive by a seed corn field and check the progress of the corn.
Earlier in life when working at DeKalb, he received his Pilots License and enjoyed flying in his spare time. Also, Wallace loved bluegrass music and enjoyed playing his harmonica. He and his twin brother, Willis, entertained at Care Centers and Music Festivals along with a group that called themselves the Nishna Valley Strummers.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Doris in 1995; sisters Alice Scharp, Mable Meads, Lois Stake, Bessie Reed, Marie Athen and Hazel Blakesley; and brothers Russell, Willard, Willis and Cecil.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Joyce Vowell of Marshall, MN; son Ivan Flynn and wife Sherry of Boone, IA; two granddaughters Balinda Roldan of Marshall, MN and Amanda Rootenberg and husband Dean of Toronto Ontario, Canada; one great-granddaughter Gabrielle Davis of Marshall, MN; a sister Audrey Flynn of Omaha, NE; special friend Connie Mascher of Farragut, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Wallace enjoyed life and made many friends. He never complained and always had a smile and a joke to tell. He will be missed by everyone.
