MADISON--Lola Mardell (Estenson) Yde, age 85, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2012 peacefully and surrounded by family.
Lola was born at home in Nicolett County , Minnesota on September 1, 1926. She was the daughter of Gustave Laurance and Eva Ella Johanna (Wieman) Estenson, younger sister to Marion, twin sister to Lila. She often spoke of her wonderful family life growing up on the farm in Northern Wisconsin. Throughout her life she connected back to those roots through her gardening, canning, baking and caring for her dogs.
Lola graduated with honors from River Falls State Teachers College in 1948 with a BA in mathematics and physics and a minor in music. Lola was passionate about music. She continued her music/violin education with workshops and classes at UW-Madison. Lola was a private violin instructor from 1956 - 2005 teaching hundreds of students the finer points of violin and sharing her love of music. Lola was also a member and served several roles in the Madison Federated Music Club, Wisconsin Federated Music Club and Schubert Club.
Lola played her violin with the Madison Symphony Orchestra for 33 years (1st violin, 1961-1994), Summer Symphony(1961-1980), Unitarian Society Orchestra (Principal, 1965-1998), Middleton Civic Orchestra (Concertmistress, 1970-1994), Mnemosyne String Quartet (Manager, 1st violin, 1960-2000). Lola was proud to have performed professionally with Itzhak Perlman, Rudolf Nureyev, Tony Orlando & Dawn, John Denver, Joshua Bell, Midori, Melissa Manchester, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Alicia de Larrocha, Smokey Robinson, Engelbert Humperdinck and the Moody Blues.
Lola was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she also performed and participated in Music Committee.
Lola was married to Richard Carlisle Yde, Sr. on June 25, 1949 and moved to Madison in 1950. She raised seven children with love and generosity. She is survived by Richard Sr., her children Richard (Katie) Yde of Madison, daughter-in-law Julie Yde, Linda (Thomas) Holmes of Madison, Mark (Lisa) Yde of Ft. Wayne, IN, Paul (Sarah Elder) Yde of University Park, MD, Carl (Lynn) Yde of Madison and Helen (Greg) Brown of Marshfield, WI; 17 grandchildren and many adoring nieces and nephews.
Lola was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, son, Jan Robert Yde and grandson Jorgen Thomas Yde.
Lola led her very full life with abundant optimism and absolute selflessness. Her confident motto was simply "to do your very best and then to be happy with the result." She lived by that motto and was a role model for all in how to find the good and the beauty in everyone and everything. Her grace, honesty, humility, integrity, charity and courage were admired by all who knew her. Lola was a true servant who touched so many lives through her love of music, friends and family.
Thank you to the staff at Oakwood West and Agrace Hospice.

Rolliana Scheckler wrote on Feb 28, 2012:

"I had the pleasure of singing with Lola and her string ensemble at Edgewood College. In a rehearsal for Mozart's Exultate, Jubilate, Lola asked me "now, exactly where do you want that ritard to begin?" Well, I had never before thought about that. I just did what felt right. For the first time I was being asked to be musically precise. Lola, kindly and gently, taught me a lesson I have carried with me ever since."
