Clifford Simon Stille, one of four children of Simon and Sarah Elizabeth (Fleer) Stille, was born on March 30, 1919 at his parent's home in rural Glenwood, Iowa. He grew up in Glenwood, attending school and graduating from Glenwood High School in 1937. Following graduation, Clifford began a lifelong career in farming and soon met Marjorie Magdalene Klindt. They were married at the Klindt home in St. Mary's Township in Mills County, Iowa, on June 18, 194l. Clifford and Marjorie made their home in the Strahan and Malvern, Iowa areas before moving to Macedonia, Iowa in 1957. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Sandra Ann and Carol Jane.
Clifford loved his career as a farmer and livestock producer, and enjoyed woodworking, but community service was always of utmost importance to him. He donated many hours of service, not only on a local level but also on the state and national level. Clifford was an active member of the Macedonia Methodist Church where he served as a lay leader and trustee as well as a Sunday School teacher for 25 years, and a choir member for 40 years. Clifford was a member of the Macedonia Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years, served on the Board of Low Rent Housing and the John Hamilton Memorial Corporation. Clifford served two terms on the M.A.P.A. Board in Omaha, NE and on the SCS Farm Advisory Committee for the Clarinda State Experimental Farm. He was chairman of the Macedonia Watershed and 23 years as a committee member on the District Soil Conservation Board serving as chairman for ten years. On the state level, Clifford was elected vice-chairman of the Conservation Commission and appointed by Governor Ray to the State Soil Conservation Committee where he served twelve years, two years as chairman and two years as vice-chairman. Clifford served as the first R.C.D. chairman for an eight county area. Clifford had many articles written about him in local, state, and national publications and received many awards during his career. In 1968, Clifford was named by the "Wallace Farmer" magazine as a "Master Farmer of Iowa" and served as the organization's president. In 1975, he was named "Outstanding Soil Conservation Commissioner" and in 1980 was awarded the seven state "United States Environmental Award" by Governor Ray. Clifford was named the "Outstanding Beef Producer" in Pottawattamie County in 1985 and also served as the organization's secretary-treasurer and director.
Due to failing health, Clifford moved to the Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa on March 12, 2001. Clifford and Marjorie had been married 61 years when Clifford died at the Bethany Home on January 2, 2003. He had attained the age of 83 years, 9 months, and 2 days. Clifford was preceded in death by his parents, brother Alfred Stille, and sisters Alma Frohardt and Nora Vohs. He is survived by his wife Marjorie of Macedonia; daughters Sandra Ann Schuette and her husband Clifford of Moorhead, Minnesota and Carol Jane Carley and her husband Doug of Oakland, Iowa; six grandchildren, Jeff and Stephanie Carley of Treynor, IA, Kirsten Krantz and Mike Bagaziniski of Chicago, IL, Robb and Laura Carley of Shenandoah, IA, Karin and Ted Bloemker of Omaha, NE, Kerry Krantz and fiancé Wade Falke of Omaha, NE, Jason Carley of Underwood, IA; two step grandchildren Jordan Schuette of Overland Park, KS and Carson Schuette of Moorhead, MN; seven great grandchildren Ryan, Taylor Alyssa, and Jacob Carley of Treynor, IA, Emily and Megan Carley of Shenandoah, IA, and Benjamin Bloemker and Jessica Falke of Omaha, NE; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
