Edward Lavern Barbour, one of six children of William Cecil Barbour and Marianna (Baker) Barbour, was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa on October 21, 1950. Ed grew up in Glenwood, Iowa where he attended school and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1968. Following high school, Ed joined the Iowa National Guard. He began working as a carman for Burlington Northern Railroad and later became a welder at their Pacific Junction shop.
On October 10, 1971, Ed and Linda Jean Belt of Glenwood were united in marriage at Grace United Methodist Church. They made their home in Glenwood and were blessed with two daughters, Monica and Angela.
Ed was an active member of the National Guard for six years. In 1975, the Burlington Northern Railroad closed their shop, and Ed drove for Unitog Laundry. Ed later worked for Collins Radio and Electric in Glenwood, and in 1983 began working at the Glenwood Resource Center. From 1986 to 1990, Ed was the co-owner of AAA Ambulance. He was an EMT-A and captain of the Glenwood Rescue Squad, member of the scuba team, and a captain of the Glenwood Fire Department.
On May 7, 1990, due to health problems, Ed was forced to retire. He continued to take an active interest in the Glenwood Fire and Rescue Department and other community activities. Ed was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Ed and Linda had been married 31 years when Ed died on August 22, 2003 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He had attained the age of 52 years, ten months, and one day. Ed was preceded in death by his father and infant brother, David. He is survived by his wife Linda; daughters Monica Mayberry and husband Lonnie and their sons Colton and Mitchell, all of Glenwood and Angela Barbour of Bellevue, NE; mother Marianna Collins, mother-in-law and father-in-law Melvin and Joy Belt, all of Glenwood; sisters Carolyn Bartmess and husband Curt of Colonial Beach, VA, Linda Smith of Nebraska City, NE, Nancy Barbour and Cheryl Howard both of Glenwood; and Ed's best friend Sparky, his service dog.
