Chester Meredith

Chester Roy Meredith, one of five children of William and Lillie M. (Ross) Meredith, was born at his parent's home in Glenwood, Iowa on December 16, 1919. Chet grew up in Glenwood and graduated from the Glenwood High School in 1937. Following school, Chet worked as the parts man and bookkeeper for the Hiatt Ford Motor Company in Glenwood.
On March 3, 1940, Chet and Mary Elizabeth Clapper were married at the Methodist parsonage in Pacific Junction, Iowa. They made their home in Glenwood and were blessed with four children, Don, Dick, Dean, and Deborah. On June 27, 1944, Chet enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served as a Corporal with the First Marine Division in the Pacific Theatre of WWII. Chet was discharged in April of 1946 and returned home to Glenwood. He worked for a brief time at the Hiatt garage and then as the projectionist at the Powers Theatre in Glenwood. The family became members of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Glenwood where Chet was baptized and confirmed on August 6, 1950.
In 1955, Chet began working on the receiving dock for the Wright & Wilhelmy Company, a wholesale hardware and sporting goods business located in Omaha, Nebraska. He soon became a buyer for the company and worked until his retirement in 1981. Chet was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he held numerous offices including elder and treasurer. He was a member of the Glenwood American Legion Post No. 1044, and enjoyed his daily coffee with friends at the senior center. In November of 2005, Chet's health forced him to move to the Glen Haven Home in Glenwood. Chet and Mary had been married nearly 66 years when Chet died at the Glen Haven Home on December 23, 2005 at the age of 86 years and 7 days.
Chet was preceded in death by his infant son, Gary Lee in 1940; his parents; and his sisters, Grace Stickland, Pearl Black, and Darlene Thomas. Chet is survived by his wife, Mary Meredith of Glenwood; sons, Don Meredith and his wife Karen and Dick Meredith and his wife Denise all of Omaha, and Dean Meredith and his wife Judy of Glenwood; daughter Deborah Hopp and her husband Dave of Glenwood; grandchildren Brandt Hopp of Glenwood, Katie Meredith of Omaha, and Billy Meredith of Glenwood; sister Helen Hunt and husband La Vern of Bellevue, NE; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
