Eva Maye Hammers, one of seven children of Margaret (Slaughter) Severn and James Severn, was born at her parent's farm home north of Tabor, Iowa on October 26, 1917. Eva attended the Walnut Grove Country School along with her siblings and then worked with her parents on the farm.
On June 15, 1934, Eva and Jonathan "Eddie" Hammers were married in Glenwood, Iowa. They made their home in Mills County, Iowa and lived on several area farms. Their marriage was blessed with four children; LeRoy, Richard, Elaine, and Viola.
Eva worked as a resident treatment worker at the Glenwood State Hospital School in Glenwood, Iowa for 19 years and received the Governor's Certificate for her many years of service. Following her retirement, Eva remained active at the Resource Center where she was a volunteer for the Foster Grandparents Program. Eva enjoyed handiwork and loved to quilt, crochet, sew, and embroider. She and Eddie enjoyed their grandchildren and square dancing. They had been married 50 years at the time of Eddie's death on September 28, 1984.
Eva continued to live at her home until December of 2003, when her health forced her to move to the Tabor Manor Care Center in Tabor, Iowa. She died at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa on February 9, 2006 at the age of 88 years, 3 months, and 14 days. Eva was preceded in death by her parents; husband Eddie Hammers; sisters Bernice Brandon, Fannie Stewart, and Ruby Fetty; brothers Lester Severn, Clarence Severn, and Raymond Severn; granddaughters Rosalee Weible and Peggy Hammers; and great granddaughter Jennifer Weible.
Eva is survived by her children, LeRoy Hammers and his wife Iona of Nebraska City, Nebraska, Richard Hammers and his wife Emajo of Glenwood, Iowa, Elaine McCampbell and her friend Junior of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, and Viola Hummel and her friend Bud of George West, Texas; 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
