Mrs. Nancy Ryan, of Port Washington and formerly of Cincinnati, OH, passed away May 1, 2012 at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton after a long battle with cancer. She was 64 years old. Nancy was born April 16, 1948 in Milwaukee, the daughter of Frank Tomasello and Viola Arbuckle. Nancy grew up in Milwaukee with her mother and step-father, Viola and Jerry Schilz. She was a graduate of Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Cincinnati, OH. On April 13, 1974 she was united in marriage with Paul Ryan. For many years, Nancy worked as a psychiatric nurse at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Port Washington, Columbia St. Mary's in Mequon and St. Michael's Hospital in Milwaukee. Both on and off the job, she cared selflessly for others. She enjoyed being with her pet dogs, horseback riding, riding her motorcycle, and being in nature. Nancy is survived by her husband Paul "Mike" of Port Washington, daughter Paula Ryan (fiancé Jason Beinemann) of Port Washington, step-daughter Lori (James) Turner of FL, 3 step-grandchildren, sisters Pam (Dennis) Roe and Barbara (Gary) Pluster, both of Sussex, brothers-in-law Ryan Mills and Daniel (Julie) Mills, other relatives and many close friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Viola, step-father Jerry, sister Debbie Schilz, brother-in-law Bryan Mills, and sister-in-law Patsy Ryan. Funeral Services will be held at 1:15PM on Friday, May 4 at Immanuel Cemetery in Cedarburg. The family will receive visitors at Eernisse Funeral Home, 1167 Washington Ave., Cedarburg on Friday, May 4 from 12 noon-1PM, leaving in procession for Immanuel Cemetery at 1PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Allay Hospice or the American Cancer Society. The Eernisse Funeral Home, Cedarburg is assisting the family with arrangements. "I met Nancy in 1990 when I came to work at Columbia St. Mary's in Ozaukee. We became instant friends, sharing our love for books, wild life,rummaging for the old things others enjoyed before us, Door County, but mostly, Clint Eastwood. How I envied the LARGE cutout of him she kept in her bedroom (given to her by a dear friend of hers ). Nancy taught me many things, the most important being to " Watch out for those bad eyes". "I worked with Nancy for several years at Good Samaritan Hospital's O'Connell Unit. She was a great mentor and friend! I loved working with her and learned a lot from her, especially techniques for working with people in a psychiatric setting. Nancy had the unique gift of compassion, tempered with a "no-nonsense" approach to wellness. In recent years, since she moved to Port Washington, I've enjoyed keeping in touch with her via Christmas cards and notes. I loved her dearly and will greatly miss her!"
"Nancy was a spitfire! Our mutual friend, Bonnie, introduced us back in 1970 in Madison, WI while Nancy was visiting from Cinci. We instantly clicked and have remained friends, even though from a distance (as I live in AZ). Upon moving to AZ in '73 - our very first stop was in Cinci to visit Mike & Nancy! From women's weekend to being an ardent Clint Eastwood fan - Nancy was always the life of the party! She visited Bisbee, AZ in '79, and we got together periodically thru the years. She was immensely proud of her daughter, Paula, and we talked about our children to each other many times. Her and Mike were a 'force' and I was so pleased to see them 'be there' for one another though out the years. Nancy will be remembered for her courage and fight, but also for her dedication to family and nursing.
