Carol L. Johnson, 73, of Burlington, died 12:15 a.m. Saturday, May 05, 2012, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born August 17, 1938 in Henderson County, IL, she was the daughter of Clair and Sylvia (Huss) Gillaspie. She was a graduate of Gladstone-Oquawka High School. In later years she attended art classes at Southeastern Community College, studying under Mr. Fletcher for one year. She married Carl W. Meyer Jr. on October 6, 1956 in Oquawka, IL. He died May 14, 1980. She then married Leonard A. Johnson on December 4, 1980.
She was a secretary, worked for Hope Haven and worked in the lab at Burlington Medical Center. She was also a waitress, and served as caretaker for her father-in-law Carl Meyer Sr. until his death. She was of the Lutheran Faith.
She loved flowers and was an artist, enjoying painting and drawing. She enjoyed gambling, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard Johnson of Burlington; her children, Matthew J. (Tammy) Meyer, Michael R. (Stacey) Meyer, Kelly A. (Donald) Walker, Larry (Janet) Johnson and Lisa (Danny) McGinity all of Burlington; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; two sisters, Jan Abney of Burlington and Donna Olson of Galesburg, IL; two brothers, Paul Gillaspie of Galesburg, IL and Billy Gillaspie of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband.
The memorial funeral service for Mrs. Johnson will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 8th in Lunning Chapel. Pastor Wayne Weissenbuehler will officiate. There will be no formal visitation. A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded.
