Tributes

Karen (Rathmann) van Vierssen wrote on Aug 2, 2012:

"To all who knew Stu, he had recently lost both legs to diabetes. He had learned to walk on his "new" legs much faster than anyone anticipated. He spent the day before his death walking into his favorite restaurant, eating his favorite dish, walking into his own home (which he had not entered since the first amputation in December), making decisions about what he did and didn't need in the way of posessions (he was planning on moving into assisted living), and joking and talking the whole day. I am so grateful to have had that day with him...we had been talking about my visit for weeks and what we would do. The next day, he was gone. I love my Little Brother and will never forget the joy, humor, and friendship we shared throughout his life. Here is one for you, Stu,...POKE. "

"I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Stu. I met him while working at Penny's. I was in the optical department and he saw how unbusy I was and would stop and chat a bit. Later we met up again at GB Eye Clinic where I am working now. He was always so kind and yes upbeat even through his trials. I will miss seeing him again. Prayers to you the family, I am sure you miss him. "

"I'll never forget the wonderful holiday evenings we shared with the Rathmann family when I was a girl. One year we'd go to their house & the next they'd come to ours. Stuart was so incredibly sweet, cheerful, and kind-hearted. I see him in my mind's eye as thought it were just last Christmas. My sympathy to Ronnie & Karen. "
