Marie Grace Watermiller, 101, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2012, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton in Hampton, Iowa. She was born on June 24, 1911, in Elkhart, Indiana, to Archie B. and Rena N. (Claire) Landon. Marie graduated from Belmond High School in 1929, and attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Raleigh G. Watermiller on November 24, 1931, in Garner, Iowa. Raleigh and Marie farmed in the Thornton area for many years until they retired to Hampton in 1973. Marie worked at the bakery in Hampton for several years after that. Marie was very active with the Church of the Living Word in Hampton. She enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, crossword puzzles and quilting. Marie made numerous quilts and afghans and began the prayer quilt project in her church. She is survived by her daughter Eleanor Ahlstom of Mission Viejo, California, daughter Shirley (Martin) Drefs of Harrison, South Dakota, son David (Carolyn) Watermiller of San Francisco, California, fifteen grandchildren, forty-six great-grandchildren, thirteen great great-grandchildren, sister Helen Hinman of Belmond and daughter-in-law Pat Watermiller of Dodge City, Kansas. Marie was preceded in death by her parents Archie and Rena, husband Raleigh, daughter Karen Terrell, son Archie, brother Wilber, sisters Fannie Halfpop and Neva Thompson and son-in-law Max Ahlstrom.
Burial will take place in the Amsterdam Cemetery in rural Goodell, Iowa.

"Marie was a woman of great faith and her faith beared much fruit. She was always patient, kind and never spoke unkindly of anyone. She shared her many quilts with anyone and everyone. It was an honor to take two of her quilts to Haiti. She was so happy to send them and then to learn about the families who received them. I can only pray that I will grow old and wise like her. She will always hold a dear place in my heart and I will greatly miss her. "

"Marie was the 'neighbor lady' for as long as I can remember....I grew up with her right out the back door. She was our grandma, babysitter, baker....whatever we needed she had. I dont have many childhood memories that don't include her. She was at our confirmations, graduations, weddings and got to share in my brother's first child. I went to see her the thursday before she passed and we had an AMAZING visit, reminisced, laughed and joked about the past. I told her I loved her and gave her several kisses and hugs and she turned to me and put her hands on my face and said, "I've loved you for 32 years" There are to many stories to tell to explain how she touched my life, I just know and so does she and those memories I will have forever."
