Mrs. Evelyn G. Heckenberg, 99, of Burlington for the past 45 years, and formerly of Kingston and Mediapolis, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born November 8, 1912 in Yellow Springs Township of Des Moines County, she was the daughter of Fred S. and Emma Pogemiller Green. On March 23, 1937 she married Fred "Fritz" G. Heckenberg in Burlington. He preceded her in death on March 1, 2003.
Mrs. Heckenberg was a graduate of Galesburg High School in Galesburg, Illinois. She was a homemaker, worked in grocery retailing and Burlington Community School District cafeteria. She also worked with her husband on their farm for 47 years, retiring in 1984 She was a member of First United Church of Christ, Ladies of the Moose, Eagles Auxiliary, Senior Citizens, King Daughters, Des Moines County Farm Bureau and Circle B Square Dance Club.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Lee (Glenda) Heckenberg of Carmel, Indiana and Larry Jay (Sandy) Heckenberg of Cumming, Georgia; one daughter, Sherry Kay (Richard) Rothzen of Burlington; five grandchildren, Steven Heckenberg, Teri Zalesky, Scott Heckenberg, Kimberly Mitchler and Shelly Kerr; 13 great grandchildren; and one brother, Wayne Green of Abingdon, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and two brothers.
Friends may call after noon on Thursday, July 26th, in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
The funeral service for Mrs. Heckenberg will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 27th, in Lunning Chapel with the Rev. JudyAnn Morse officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for First United Church of Christ.
