Remembering the life of.......

Marie Bernice Halliday Handegard, 83, died on Saturday, September 29, 2012, in McFarland, WI, following an extended illness. She was devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many.

Marie was born January 12, 1929, in Barnesville, Minnesota, the first born to Daniel and Sigrid (Storholt) Halliday. She grew up in Cormorant, MN; she was baptized on June 23, 1929 and confirmed in 1943.

After returning from the West Coast at the end of WW11, she briefly worked at AT&T in Detroit Lakes, MN. On July 13, 1947, she married Wallace Handegard. They lived in various places before settling down in Fargo, ND. She was a dietary aid at St. John's Hospital for many years. She returned to the telephone business and worked at AT&T for over 20 years. She retired as a Supervisor in 1988.
She truly loved her work and was commended for her spotless attendance record. Marie had recently moved to McFarland, WI to be near her daughter, grandson and great-grand- daughters as she dealt with her declining heath.

Marie loved to travel near and far. She visited Norway and Sweden twice and longed to return. She and her daughter (Pat) and grandsons (Brent and Derek) made the news when they completed visiting all 48 state capitols.

After retiring, Marie kept busy doting on her grandsons and great granddaughters. She wrote a brief history of her childhood and researched the Halliday Family Tree with her sister Louise. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Marie was a long-time member of Peace Lutheran Church in Fargo. She volunteered at the Fargo Food Shelf and the Telephone Pioneers of America and worked with her daughter on Habitat for Humanity.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Patricia Hall (James) of Cambridge, WI, and her son, Russell Handegard (Kyle) of Fargo; four grandson Brent and Derek Westrum and Erick and Michael Handegard; three great-granddaughters, Bergen and Lila Westrum and Halle Handegard; a brother, David Halliday of Fargo, a sister, Shirley Giere (Silas) of Willmar, MN, a brother-in-law, Charles Lindstrom of Fergus Falls, MN and several nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her ex-husband, her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Lorna Halliday; her sister, Louise Lindstrom. Services will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, 1011 12th Ave. N, Fargo North Dakota on Friday, October 5, at 1:00pm. Visitation will be one hour before the memorial service at the church.

"I worked with Marie for many years at AT&T - she was such a wonderful woman! I loved her sense of loyalty, her thriftiness, her honesty, her quick wit and sense of humor. She was 20 years older than me and to this day I think of her often and try to model myself after her. I still run into situations where I ask myself "What would Marie do?" I've been blessed and honored to have known Marie - she was truly a Great Woman! "
