November 3, 1929 - November 30, 2012

MADISON-Irvin M. Youngerman, 83, passed away on Friday, November 30, 2012 in TLC South at UW-Hospital in Madison. Irvin was born November 3, 1929 in South Bend, Indiana. After completing undergraduate and graduate school in Indiana he initially worked for the Army and then spent most of his career as a financial analyst at General Services Administration, a branch of the federal government, in downtown Chicago for many years. He married Marion Sarko on August 31, 1963 in Chicago and lived there for six years. They subsequently moved to Evanston, Illinois and lived there for many years before he retired and they moved to Madison, Wisconsin in 1988. Irvin volunteered many hours at the Overture Center, the Madison Children's Museum, and the State Historical Society. He had a passion for traveling and he and Marion traveled to many European cities, including Paris, London, and Vienna. They also enjoyed their cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, and Eastern Canada. Irv loved to play bridge and cribbage, attend the large variety of cultural and educational events that Madison has to offer, and enjoyed good food; especially deserts. He kept his mind active by auditing many classes at UW-Madison. He was an avid conversationalist but he was the quintessential listener and always remembered important events in his friends' lives.

Irvin is survived by his daughter, Denise Youngerman; son-in-law, Scott Deyo; step-grandson, Dr. Christopher (Dr. Abigail) Deyo; step-great-grandchildren; Michael and Claire Deyo; sister-in-laws Catherine Zitz, Cecile (Tom) Wilbourne, and Charlotte Walton; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

"Irvin was my uncle. I miss him along with Marion. I cherish the trips they made to Las Vegas "

"From Susan Francis Dec. 19, 2012 I knew Irv through the Madison Area Group Investor's Club. I gave him a ride to meetings sometimes when the weather was bad. I also ran into him at Metcalfe's where I work now, and Irv was a frequesnt customer. Irv was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He remembered facts about your life because he really took a sincere interest. I;m saddened by his loss. I actually thought Irv was older. He told me once that he really regretted not having granchildren nearby."

"I met Irvin about 6 years ago as a customer in Walgreens on University Avenue in Madison. I would see him and his wife in the store periodically. One night as I was leaving the store I noticed him having some trouble with his car. It was one of the first days of winter and the weather was official considered "cold" and also the kind of day when you discover things such as a car battery that needs to be replaced, as was the situation that night. I helped him get it jump started so he and Marion could get on their way little knowing that this was my first real interaction with Irvin that would turn out being the start of a wonderful friendship. At the time I didn't know too much about his wife's condition- in fact I didn't see much of Irvin for several months at the store after that night- I didn't know till later that Marion had passed away- when I did start seeing him in the store again and I finally asked how she was. I could tell he was hurting, so I offered all I could at that time- a hug. For some reason we decided to get together for lunch- I'm sure Irvin could remember the details much better than myself- I tend to forget things rather quickly, so all I remember is that we got together for one lunch- then two and three, until we were eating lunch together every week somewhere close to Metcalf's or inside Metcalf's at their coffee shop. If was during these lunches that Irvin became not just a close friend, but also a mentor and advisor- he helped me scheme and plan and dream. He always cut out the copies of the comic strip "Retail" for me as I worked at Walgreens and also encouraged me to look for something else as a career. He came to birthdays and holiday events with our family. At some point I got transferred to the Walgreens in Deforest, but we continued to eat together, usually breakfast at the Original Pancake House in Middleton- he would usually order the Crapes and shared half of them with me- his favorite were the peach filled type. Thanks Irvin for being such an awesome friend, you will be missed by many. "
