Mark Joseph Schuller (Junior/Hans) was born June 19, 1927 in Mallard, IA to Mark R. and Elizabeth (Neu) Schuller. Mark grew up on the family farm and received his diploma from Mallard High School. He served in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict.
On June 14, 1952, Mark was united in marriage to Carol Murphy of Emmetsburg. They made their home on the same farm Mark grew up on in rural Mallard. He farmed, was an excellent carpenter, even building his family home. He also worked for the Palo Alto ASCS Office.
Mark was a very active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Mallard including many years as church director. He was a member of the Anderson-Eckert-Hersom American Legion Post 345 and was very proud to wear his uniform for various events in the community.
Mark always kept busy. He loved to tinker in his garage and machine shed. His daily card game with the guys was something he rarely missed. He shared this love of cards with his kids and grandkids. Mark found no greater joy than spending time with his family. Visits with his 20 grandkids brought such a smile to his face. His philosophy was "you're always welcome at the farm." No matter how big the crowd, Mark could always make room for one more. He never knew a stranger.
On Sunday, July 11, 2010, Mark Schuller passed away at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Donald Schuller and Dr. Bernard Schuller; four sisters: Valeria Sauter, Dolores Byrne, Eileen Schuller and Monica Schuller.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Carol; eight children: Cathy Backstrom (Denny), Joseph Schuller (Laura), and Linda Ruppert (Larry) all of Mallard, Karen Krug (Kent) of Heber Springs, Arkansas, John Schuller (Joan) of Grundy Center, Iowa, Jackie Wilson of Columbia, Missouri, Patty Brooks (Mike) of Huxley, Iowa and Peggy Kolpek of Ankeny, Iowa; 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Palo Alto County (3201 First Street - Emmetsburg, Iowa 50536) or charities of the family's choice.
