Helen was born October 21, 1918, in Lamoni, Iowa, the daughter of Frank L. and Anna (Schnellman) Gray. She attended St. Mary's Academy and was a graduate of Emmetsburg High School. On May 22, 1940, Helen was united in marriage to H. Dale Garber in Graettinger. To this union eight children were born. The coupe farmed in the county since their marriage, and in 1955, they moved to a farm near Ayrshire where they remained until retiring off of the farm. Helen also worked as a bookkeeper at the Farmer's Elevator in Ruthven, Farm Service in Ruthven, and she spent over 20 years with Helgen Law Office in Emmetsburg. Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ayrshire. She enjoyed gardening, bookwork, taking walks, reading and playing scrabble. Helen spent many hours crocheting and making afghans. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling with her sister, Mary. On Sunday, March 3, 2013, Helen passed away at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. She was 94. lyn Garber and special friend, Peter Simmons of Minneapolis, MN, Jane Moen and her husband, Adron of Emmetsburg, Laurie Schneider and her husband, Dave of Emmetsburg and Bill Garber and his wife, Gloria of Papillion, NE; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Helen Christianson of Inver Grove Heights, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; daughter, Eileen; and two sisters: Mary Quick and Maxine Frost. Memorials may be left to the Lost Island Nature Center or Ayrshire United Methodist Church.
