Vera Joy Evans

Vera Joy Evans, one of three children of Minnie (Ast) and Howard William Knott, was born on March 22, 1916 on her grandparents' farm near Minden, Iowa. Her family lived in several different locations in this area where Vera attended country schools. When she was 12 years old, her family moved to Avoca, Iowa due to her father's declining health. Vera continued her education in the Avoca public schools. Vera and Loren Edward Evans were married on October 25, 1934 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Roberta, Ronald, and Dale. The couple established their first home on a farm near Oakland, Iowa. They eventually partnered in a business, owning a Skelly gas station. They expanded their business to include a livestock trucking and custom feed grinding operation. In 1947, they purchased their first farm northwest of Carson, Iowa, where they continued to live and expand their farm operation. Vera and Loren were married 64 years when Loren passed March 23, 1999. Vera continued to live on the home place until 2010, when she entered Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa. nd served on many church committees. She belonged to the "Quality Quilters" at the church and looked forward to their weekly quilting bees. Vera also was a faithful blood donor for many years. Vera and Loren spent much time in their motor home with family and friends and visited destinations in Alaska, Canada, Florida, and Texas. She loved to be with family and friends and enjoyed being "on the go". Spring and summer were Vera's favorite times of the year so she could be outdoors to work in her yard and garden. She could never have too many potted geraniums on her steps. Vera passed away on March 23, 2013 at the Elm Heights in Shenandoah, at the age of 97 years and 1 day. She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband Loren; son Ronald Evans in 1998, and brother Gene Knott. Vera is survived by her daughter Roberta Overholser of Shenandoah; son Dale Evans and wife Kay of Carson; ten grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and brother Earl Knott of Waterford, MI. Interment in Fairview Pioneer Cemetery, rural Treynor, Iowa. Memorials to the Carson Fire & Rescue or Donor's Choice. Loess Hills Funeral Home of Carson in charge of arrangements.
