Melvin E. Ricks

Melvin Edwin Ricks was born May 12, 1929, along with his twin brother, Elmer, on a farm outside of Titonka. He was a son of Simon and Henrietta (Wagner) Ricks. Melvin was raised on farms in Titonka and Sexton area and attended school in Titonka. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1948 and after training at various bases throughout the United States, he was stationed at the Feamcom Air Force Base in Tachikawa, Japan. He was honorably discharged in May of 1952 and returned home to Titonka. Melvin married Norma Lee Reimers on November 8, 1953, at First Presbyterian Church in Algona. They moved to Titonka where Melvin worked at John Deere for one year. He then worked at the Farmers' Cooperative Elevator for the next 38 years retiring in 1991 at the age of 62. Melvin enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, and dancing. He was known for his wit, his positive attitude, and his willingness to help anybody at any time. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. Melvin E. Ricks died Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Melissa Ricks; a sister, Anna Potter; and his twin brother, Elmer Ricks.
