Vernon E. Shimanek, Jr., 57, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
A private burial was held from the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery in Rock Island, Illinois. There was no visitation. The Carson Celebration of Life Center is caring for the family.
Vernon Edgar Shimanek, Jr. was born on August 29, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois to Vernon Edgar and Sylvia Shimanek, Sr. He graduated high school and entered the military where he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1973 to 1977. He was stationed on 3 different ships, earned an honorable discharge and was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Campaign Star, Rifle Expert Badge, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal and the Sea Service Department Ribbon.
Those left to honor his memory include his mother, Sylvia; and brothers, Mike, Dale, David and Edward. He was preceded in death by his father.
