Susan T. Larsen

Susan Todd Larsen, age 73, of Okoboji, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. She was born on April 30, 1940, in Graettinger, Iowa, to Dr. Creno and Evelyn (Waters) Shiley. Sue graduated from Graettinger High School in 1958, and the University of Iowa in 1962. She was united in marriage to Paul Larsen in 1958, and after completing their education moved to Estherville. After Paul's untimely death, Sue lived for the past twenty years in Okoboji, enjoying the lake views from Des Moines Beach, boating and spending time with family and friends. Sue taught at the elementary level in Iowa City and Estherville, taught and supervised remedial reading in Iowa City, and initiated the Talented and Gifted Program in the Estherville Schools. She taught dog obedience training for twenty years, starting as a 4-H leader, was a veterinary assistant for over six years, a member of the Dickinson County Water Quality Commission, on the Planning and Zoning Committee, and was in her fourteenth year on the Okoboji City Council. Sue is survived by her son, Michael Larsen, and his wife, Helen, and her son, Brody; daughters, Cynthia Simmons, and her husband, Jerrod, and his daughter, Brianna, and Jone Voss; grandchildren, Ben Larsen (Emily Anderson), Shae Larsen, Nathan, Jacob, Katherine and Samuel Wigans and Tyler Voss; great-granddaughter, Kendal Larsen; Sue's faithful sister, Jonne Shiley; and her friend, Dotty Hill. A funeral service will be held at 10:30A.M. Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at First Lutheran Church in West Okoboji. Visitation will be held Monday, from 4:00P.M. until 7:00P.M. at the Schuchert Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Burial will be at the Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery. The Schuchert Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
