On the morning of August 25, 2013, Richard Lee Brockett of New Orleans, Louisiana, peacefully passed away from lung cancer in his home. Richard was born on September 21, 1967 He lived life to the fullest and took things in stride. Richard was a Marine Corps brat living his young years on military bases throughout the United States. Richard was a business man, in Burlington, Iowa. He had Poor Boys hamburgers on Mt. Pleasant Street, and they had the best food in town. He was a partner with his brother in Bruders coffee house on Jefferson Street. He also had the company Peak Roofing and Restoration that he started in January 1999- 2005. After Katrina, he went to Louisiana and worked with Ponchatrain Roofing, Kingston Restoration, as well as being an insurance adjustor, and finally he started West End Reconstruction LLC in January 2006. In January 2009, he started writing articles for the Examiner, a paper in New Orleans, Louisiana. He studied journalism at Southeastern community college in 1987, Orange Coast College 1988-1991, and Saddleback College in 1990. yna Marie Brockett, 27, of Portland, Oregon, and Michelle Tegan Brockett, 17, of Burlington, Iowa. His sons Conner Richard Brockett, 14, of Burlington, Iowa, and Elliot Tegan Cayton, 2, Kansas City, Kansas. In 2010, he met the love of his life, Erin Christman, his Fiancee, in New Orleans, Louisiana, who fought along side Richard from his diagnosis to his last day. His mother Sharon McGriff, father Rex Brockett, Sr., and his step-father Mark McGriff. His brothers, Rex Brockett, Jr., Ora (Opie) Paul Brockett, and His sister, Trina L. Brockett-Scott. His grandparents, Dorothy and Lyle Thele, His nieces and nephews, and too many more family members to mention. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Ethel and Paul Tegan, and Ora and Hazel Brockett. Richard enjoyed ska and blues music, surfing, Stuckey's, drinking wine, bike rides with friends, day-long road trips, making personalized t-shirts, open water of any kind, helping others, VW vans and Airstreams, vintage cafe motorcycles, making people laugh, the color green, his children, his children, his children, etc. He was a son, a brother, an uncle, a father, and everyone's best friend. He was patient, kind, loving and took life in stride. He influenced many people, he loved kids, animals and nature. He traveled so many places and always lit up the room and brought the kid out in all of us. My brother will be remembered as a wonderful man who loved life and lived it to the fullest. Richard will be cremated in New Orleans Louisiana at the Heritage funeral home. There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial on September 21st, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Washington, 306 Washington St., Burlington, IA, 52601.
