Bernice Mae Shaw was born March 7, 1915 at rural Sexton, Iowa to Christian and Euphame (Blain) Jensen. She moved with her parents to a farm southwest of Sexton then to a farm near Whittemore. She attended Pioneer School District #6 in Irvington Township. She helped on the family farm until her marriage to Eldon Shaw on January 10, 1939 in Algona. The couple farmed four years east of Titonka then moved in 1947 to a farm in Whittemore Township. They moved into Algona in 1973. Bernice worked at Good Samaritan Care Center from 1971 - 1995 as a nurses aide. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Algona, was a member of the Four Corners Mothers and Daughters Club, the Cresco Mothers and Daughters Club, the Lucky Dozen Birthday Club, the Junior Tyke Federated Club and the National Poetry Society. She was a kind, hardworking lady who loved to quilt, scrap book, write poetry and work in her garden attending her flowers. Her greatest enjoyment though was being involved with her grandchildren's many activities. sident of the Algona Manor Care Center in June, 2004, and died there on Saturday morning, September 7, 2013 at the age of 98. Survivors include her son Russel and wife Pam of Algona and daughter, Verdean (Dee) Baas of Coralville, Iowa as well as six grandchildren, Tamie Mosley, Colleen Forgey, Natasha Venteicher, Julie Tyler, Adam Shaw and Ronald Baas., 12 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eldon in 2001, her sister Gladys and granddaughter Marsha Baas.
