Melvin "Mel" A. Sommerfeld

Mr. Melvin A. Sommerfeld, 87, of Burlington died at 10:12 p.m., Thursday, October 17, 2013, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born December 12, 1925 in Burlington, he was the son of Harvey and Elizabeth Trosen Sommerfeld. On December 30, 1955 he married Margaret Flenner in Kahoka, Missouri. She preceded him in death on September 20, 1990. He married Ruth Stewart on October 24, 1992 in Burlington. She also preceded him in death on November 23, 2009. Mr. Sommerfeld was a 1943 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a Navy veteran. Mr. Sommerfeld was a salesman working first for Lambert's and then later for Merchants Wholesale. He was a member of SS John & Paul Catholic Church, Moose Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Blackhawk Booster Club. He was a lifelong fan of Cubs baseball, and enjoyed bowling, dancing, fishing and SCC basketball. ; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives and one sister. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday, October 20th, at Lunning Chapel. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Blackhawk Booster Club. According to Mr. Sommerfeld's wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.
