Mel Brown passed away peacefully on the afternoon of December 10th with his daughter Pam by his side. He was 91. He was founder of Mel Brown Furniture and Mel Brown International, prominent importers of high end international modern furniture and lighting, which was located at the corner of Figueroa and Slauson for over 50 years. He was also an award-winning innovator, and internationally-known expert on furniture design and construction. Mel was an active member of the National Society of Interior Designers, and the Furniture Retailers Association, and served on its Board of Directors for five years. Melvin Brown was born November 19, 1922 in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from Washington High School in 1941, and served honorably in the Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1947, he started his furniture business in an old two story house, using second-hand furniture as inventory. In 1948 he married his soul mate Muriel (Mimi), and together they built Mel Brown Furniture into one of Los Angeles's premier outlets. He is also predeceased by his sister Barbara Mott and survived by nieces Elise Sinay Spilker and Nancy Sunkin and their children Audrey Spilker Hagar and Joanna Spilker and Erica Sunkin and Emma Sunkin.
