Verne A. Keerbs, age 79, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Lake City and Mallard, passed away Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake. He was born on February 19, 1934, in Mallard, Iowa, to Willard and Lillian (Truog) Keerbs.
Verne graduated from Mallard High School and Buena Vista College with his B.A. Degree. He served his country in the United States Army. Verne was united in marriage to Ann Rees on June 16, 1963, in Jefferson, Iowa. He worked as the Paton Churdan Elementary Principal, before moving to Lake City in 1975. Verne served as the Elementary Principal, before becoming the Superintendent of Schools in Lake City.
Verne was a member of Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited and the American Legion. He enjoyed spending his spare time hunting, fishing, refereeing and officiating games. Verne was inducted into the Referee Hall of Fame.
Verne is survived by his wife, Ann Keerbs of Spirit Lake; daughter, Andrea Keerbs of Tblisi, Republic of Georgia; son, Mark Keerbs of Dallas, Texas; two sisters, Velma Keerbs of Mallard, and Vivian Keerbs of Mallard. He was preceded in death by his parents.
