Phyllis Mae Brown

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Burial is in St. John's Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The family will greet friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home where there will be a Catholic Daughter's Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 6:00 p.m. Phyllis Mae Brown was born November 28, 1927, on the family farm near Cylinder, Iowa, the daughter of Harlan and Kathryn (Barnhart) Frederick. She was a 1945 graduate of Emmetsburg High School, and she graduated from Hamilton Business School in Mason City. On April 12, 1948, Phyllis was united in marriage to Daniel Brown in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Phyllis raised her family and worked with Dan at the Model Cleaners. Later, she worked as a dietary aide for Lakeside Lutheran Home until her retirement. Phyllis enjoyed bowling league and traveling to the state tournament. She liked to read, play cards, and attend family get-togethers (they were always highlighted by Phyllis' famous kringla, kumla and potato salad. Sundays were always special times at the farm. V, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. Phyllis was a member of Holy Family Parish, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 2295. Left to cherish her memory are her sons: Dan and wife, Carol of Mason City, IA and Pat and wife, Deb of Amarillo, TX; son-in-law, Roger Halstead of Cylinder; three grandsons: Roger Halstead, Jr. (Christine), Todd Halstead (Crystal) and Matt Brown; and two granddaughters: Carly Brown and Cassie Brown; six great-grandchildren: Jake Halstead, Savannah and Mariah Halstead, Atlantis Brown, Nakia and Nikyra Hatch; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Jo Girard. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dan; daughter, Sandra Halstead; and her sister, Shirley O'Dell.
