John F Steinbach

John F. Steinbach was born October 10, 1914 in Knoxville, Iowa to Frank and Anna (Farrell) Steinbach. He was raised in Chariton and went to Chariton High School through his sophomore year, when his father told him it was time for his education and took him to the farm. The year was 1931 when he began farming. John was married to Mary Ellen Hunerdosse on April 20, 1938 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton. This union was blessed with two children: Tom and Barbara. They fed sheep, cattle and hogs on their farm for many years. John was a steward of the land and was innovative in many ways. Soil conservation and improving pastures were of great importance for which he won awards in both. John built the road that curves along the ridge to his house, eliminating the up and down washed out road going north and south. A longtime member of Farm Bureau, John was awarded 'Farmer of the Year' in recognition of his success. John was involved with his children in 4-H and showing cattle. He enjoyed fishing and loved to cut firewood. John was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ellen in 1995 and son Tom in 2008. A funeral service for John will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 11, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton, with a rosary service at 5:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to Lucas County Fair Board and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
