Virgil R. Akers, age 89, of Franklin, Ohio, went to his eternal home on Sunday September 7, 2014 at Hospice of Butler-Warren Counties. He was born in Middletown, Ohio on March 5, 1925 to the late Worth and Mattie (Stamper) Akers. Virgil served in the Air Force and Navy during World War II. He was an underwater demolitionist and torpedo man in the Navy and was involved in the invasion of Normandy while in the Air Force. He was also a member of the First Church of God in Carlisle. He was employed with Avco for 13 years and retired in 1980. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sons, Randy & Barry, 5 brothers and 1 sister. Virgil is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Thelma Jean Akers, and loving family: three daughters, Karen (Charles) Shouse, Rhonda (Steve) Ward, Felicia (Alger) Back; two sons, Douglas (Diane) Akers, Terry (Cindy) Akers; grandchildren, Jesse & Steven Reeves, Joshua, Seth & Levi Walsh, Austin & Blake Akers and Matthew & Alicia Akers; and 7 great-grandchildren; 1 sister.
