She served 27 years as an elected member of the Palo Alto County Hospital Board and was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir and participated in women's circles. Shirley was also involved in P.E.O., Friday Club, and bridge clubs. She shared several travel experiences with Aaron and her sons. She went on a mission trip to Japan, wintered in Arizona, and spent summers on West Lake Okoboji. Shirley is survived by her four sons: Dr. David (Becky), Jackson, MN; The Rev. Dr. Steven (Patti), Scottsdale, AZ; Kevin (Lori), West Des Moines, IA; and Brent (Maria), Glen Ellyn, IL; nine grandchildren: Meredith (Seth) Erickson; The Rev. Matthew; Katelyn (Stephen) McMahan; Michael; Peter; Joel; Benjamin; Cameron; and Ethan; sisters-in-law Phyllis Smith, Sheldon, IA; Laura Kruse-Krueger, Walcott, IA; and Arlyne Thomas, Woodland Park, CO; and caregiver Linda Gjerde, Emmetsburg. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Aaron, daughter-in-law Sue (Thompson) Kruse, brother Roger W. Smith, and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
