Herman David Verwers, 85, of Melcher-Dallas, passed away on October 29, 2014 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Melcher-Dallas with family receiving friends prior to the service beginning at 12:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Dallas Cemetery. Memorials are requested in care of Herman's family. Herman was born on March 19, 1929 to Albert and Fannie Verwers on their family farm in Gosport, Iowa. He was the youngest of eleven children and attended Gosport School. On July 20, 1946 he married Hannah Scott in Dallas, Iowa. Of this union, four children were born: Don, Judy, Barb and Kathie. Herman's family continued to grow. Don, Judy, Barb and Kathie had thirteen children between them: Todd Verwers, Gary Verwers, Larry Verwers, Corey Johnson, Ronnie Durham, Shane Ripperger, Brett Ripperger, Bryce Ripperger, Gregg Van Wyk, Michelle Verwers, Jill Johnson, Scott VanWyk and Kristin Ripperger McCauley. e best father and grandfather that he could be. He really enjoyed his time with them and loved to visit. Herman was the proud owner of Verwers Service, a wrecker service, in Melcher-Dallas that was established in 1955. He was a very hard worker. In addition to owning his own business, he worked for various businesses over the years, including: the VA, the railroad, Firestone and a local garbage route. Herman was an ornery soul with a quick wit. He never forgot a thing and was a quite the practical joker. He was also an honest man and always tried to do the right thing. Herman was a thinker and was constantly trying to think of better ways to do things. He will be greatly missed. Herman was preceded in death by his parents: Albert and Fannie; his son, Don Verwers; and 10 siblings. Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Hannah; his daughters: Judy (Leon) Ripperger, Barb (Ron) Van Wyk, and Kathie (Dennis) Perryman; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
