James F. "Jim" Small, 58, of Bernard, Iowa, died unexpectedly on Sunday morning, November 23, 2014, at his home in rural Bernard. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 11 A.M., Wednesday, November 26, 2014, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Cremation rites will be accorded following the celebration of life service. James Frederick Small was born on April 24, 1956 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Leslie Ernest "Ernie" and Evelyn A. (Scheibe) Small. He was a 1974 graduate of Western Dubuque High School. He married Julie Brown on September 22, 1984 in Dubuque, Iowa and to this union three children were born: Jessica, Jenny and Joey. Jim was a lifelong farmer who thoroughly enjoyed farming with his two brothers and being a partner in the family business, Small Brothers Farms Inc. Jim was a member of Whitetails Unlimited. He loved all kinds of hunting, fishing for Catfish and Walleye, going to the casino, playing cards especially Euchre, and the good ole outdoors. Those left to honor Jim's memory include his children Jessica (fiancé Darren Ramaker) Ayers of Dubuque, IA, Jenny (Justin) Mescher of Dyersville, IA, and Joey (and special friend Sam Peterson) Small of Dubuque, IA; 5 grandchildren; brothers Edward (Carol) Small of Bernard, IA, and Richard "Rick" (Tammie) Small of Bernard, IA; sisters Janice (Paul) Ruggeberg of Maquoketa, IA, and Phyllis (Bill) Turnis of Bernard, IA; and the mother of his children Julie Small of Dubuque, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law David Ruggeberg, and a nephew Scott Ruggeberg. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a James F.
