John Gilbert Volk was born April 15, 1932, in West Bend, Iowa, the son of John and Goldie (Ludwig) Volk. He grew up in Whittemore where he attended school. After his schooling he began to work and later joined the United States Army in 1950 and served until his honorable discharge in 1952. On October 5, 1953, John was united in marriage to Virginia Heiderscheidt. They lived in Whittemore and John worked at the body shop for Martin Zimmerman, painted and also helped different farmers and later worked at Universal in Algona. Virginia died on July 3, 1963. John was later remarried to Ruth Westling and they lived in Humboldt where he worked various jobs. Ruth died on July 8, 1997, and John remained living in Humboldt until moving to Algona in 2009. John enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, cooking, singing, flowers and spending time with his dog, Skeeter. He was a member of the Seely-Walsh American Legion Post #425 of Whittemore. John died Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, Iowa. He was 83. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Virginia; second wife, Ruth; grandson, Phillip Mergen; two sisters, Delores Menke and Charlotte Doocy.
