Pacific and then on to the Philippines. Delbert was awarded the Purple Heart due to a land mine explosion where he lost his hand and had some other injuries. He was discharged in October 1945. His rank was P.F.C. with the 41st division. After recuperating, he worked in an oil station and later purchased a Sinclair Station in Oakland, NE. He worked at Ketchum Implement and Davenport Chevrolet in Carson. He later opened and operated a welding business in 1959, and retired from that in 1984. Delbert married Janis Shiffer in Coon Rapids on May 17, 1948. Their marriage was blessed with one son, Douglas Dean. Janis died after a long battle with cancer in 1981. Delbert and Cleda Miller were married in Las Vegas on October 26, 1985. The couple enjoyed traveling, camping with friends and he enjoyed going to the coffee shop. Delbert was a member of the United Methodist Church in Carson and later went to the Wheeler Grove U.C.C. He served on the town council, and was a Carson volunteer fireman for over 30 years. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 556, VFW and DAV. Delbert is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Janis, brothers, Calvin and Melvin Palmer; sisters, Evelyn Dilly and Vina Lyman; granddaughter Deanna LeKander, and grandson, Daniel Reason. Delbert is survived by his wife, Cleda; son, Douglas (Mary) Palmer, step daughter Evelyn (Ray) Blanchard; step son Jack (Phyllis) Miller, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
