Kathryn M. "Kit" Bartels, 97, of Coal City, Illinois, and formerly of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday morning, December 30, 2015, at the home of her daughter, Karen Wills, in Coal City, Illinois. A celebration of Kathryn's life will be held at 11:30 A.M., Monday, January 4, 2016, at First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. at the church. Burial will be at the Buckhorn Cemetery, rural Maquoketa. Kathryn M. Bowman was born on May 6, 1918 in Arlington, Iowa, to Henry and Ida Irene (Nelson) Bowman. She was a 1935 graduate of Aurora, Iowa High School. She married Albert Hoyer on May 6, 1936 in Arlington, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Sheila and Karen. Albert preceded her in death on October 22, 1972, and on May 30, 1987 she married Carl H. Bartels in Maquoketa, Iowa. Carl preceded her in death on December 9, 2007. "Kit" as she was affectionately known by many was a mother and homemaker who farmed with her husband in the Nashville, Iowa area. Merry Knitters Sewing Club. She was a charter member of the Joinerville Boat Club. "Kit" loved animals and enjoyed feeding the birds and rabbits. She also enjoyed gardening, flowers and camping. Those left to honor Kathryn's memory include a daughter, Karen (Bob) Wills of Coal City, IL; 4 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Albert and her husband Carl, a brother Arthur, a sister Hazel, a daughter Sheila Ziemba, a granddaughter Julie Mulford, and a great-grandson Jacob Scopel. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa or to the Jackson County Humane Society.
