Alvin Lloyd Kuehn completed a long life filled with caring, achievement, and contribution on June 10, 2007 surrounded by his family, he was 86. Al was born in Brookville, Indiana on November 25th, 1920 to the late William and Matilda Suhre Kuehn. He, and his brothers and sisters were raised by their mother Matilda. His Mother and his brothers Walter and Pete and sisters Alma and Mary preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by two infant sons Denis Alan Kuehn and Kent Lee Kuehn. Mr. Kuehn attended Brookville High School where he played on the varsity basketball team as well as in the high school orchestra. He was Vice President of his senior class and graduated in 1938. He then enrolled in Moller Barber College in Cincinnati, Ohio to obtain his barbers license, a trade that would serve him well later in his young life. When World War II broke out, Al worked in a Connersville, Indiana factory making aircraft bomber wings. He was drafted into the Army in 1942 and underwent ordinance training in Los Angeles. n the southwest Pacific theatre with the 370th Bomb Squadron. Following the end of hostilities, he was discharged from active duty in December 1945. In May of 1946 he married his wife of 61years, the former Virginia Maxine Applegeet, who survives him. Due to a shortage of Ordinance Officers, Al was recalled to active duty in July of 1946 and served for an additional two years at Newport News, Virginia and Langley Airforce Base. It was at Newport News that his daughter Jennifer Jane Kuehn was born in August of 1947. Al was discharged in July 1948 and enrolled at Indiana University where he put himself through college by cutting hair at a Bloomington barber shop. Majoring in Finance, he graduated with honors in 2 ´ years. In December 1951, he joined Irwin Union Bank and Trust Company in Columbus, Indiana as an Assistant Cashier and Management Trainee. During his over 21 years in Columbus, Al was involved in many activities both in and outside of the bank. He served on the Columbus Utility Service Board and was President of the Columbus Kiwanis Club. He and Virginia were charter members of Asbury United Methodist Church. In 1969, then Gov. Ed Whitcomb named Al to serve on the Indiana State Teachers Retirement Fund, a group he later served as President. When he left Irwin Union in 1972, he was Senior Vice President and Secretary to the Board of Directors. Mr. Kuehn joined American Fletcher National Bank in Indianapolis in March of 1972 as Executive Vice President in charge of both the bank?s bond portfolio and its money position. In addition to his duties at AFNB, Al served on the Board of Directors of Methodist Hospital of Indiana from 1973 until 1983. He was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1979 and served in that capacity thru 1982. He retired from American Fletcher in 1982 but continued his community involvement, serving on the Carmel Economic Development Commission. Al and Virginia were long time members of St. Luke?s United Methodist Church. They were also members of Meridian Hills Country Club. In addition to his wife Virginia, Al is survived by his daughter Jennifer (Mrs. Robert) Andrews of Carmel; a grandson Brad (Megan) Andrews of Fishers, and a granddaughter Becky (Mrs. Michael) O?Brien of Indianapolis. He is also survived by four great grandchildren Grace and Thomas O?Brien and Miles and Charlotte Andrews. Services for Alvin Kuehn will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, June 14, 2007 at St Luke?s United Methodist Church with burial to follow at 2 PM in Brookville, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday June 13, 2007 at Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, 740 E 86th St., Indianapolis. In Tom Brokaw?s book, ?The Greatest Generation?, the author writes about those Americans who made this nation great in the last century. He is talking about people like Al Kuehn, a man who started from humble beginnings, worked for his education, defended his country, built a successful career, gave back to his community, and loved his family.
